Basement Built-In and Accent Wall: Transforming Underutilized Spaces into Entertaining Havens

When it comes to reimaging living spaces, even the most overlooked areas of your home can become stunning, functional areas you’ll actually want to spend more time in. Recently, we took on the challenge of transforming a basement living room that was in need of more seating, storage, and personality. What we ended with was a bold, beautifully crafted space that now serves as the perfect backdrop for hosting and everyday living for the Parker family.

How We Used Built-Ins to Maximize Space

The client’s goal for the project was to create more storage, seating, and a design that brought a sense of fun and interest into the space. To create that reality for this family, we decided a custom-built wall unit that seamlessly integrates the room’s existing architecture would be the best choice.

Unlike standalone furniture pieces, built-ins allow you to utilize the entire wall and create a more cohesive and spacious environment. By pulling from the existing stains used throughout the client’s home, we were able to make sure the new additions felt like they were built with the house! The end result included a larger, more functional and stylish space.

Utilizing a Bold Accent Wall

We knew the built-ins would elevate the space. But, we wanted to push the design a bit further. We added an accent wall that’s painted a deep, dark green that works to contrast the other neutral tones in the room.

The color choice was incredibly intentional - it’s dark enough to let the room’s details shine, without being too dark. At first glance, the wall might look black, but it’s actually a deep green. We choose to avoid black in our designs because it tends to swallow up the details of a space. With the dark green, you can see the details of the cabinet doors come to life.

The Transformation’s Result

One of the family’s requests was to create a space that had more seating and could be a multipurpose space. The room already had side chairs that were tucked away which we brought back into the space and new design. These chairs can be used as extra seating, or as decor when not in use. Along the counter, we added additional setting which allows the space to transform from family movie nights, to larger gatherings.

At Olive Tree Design Build, we believe that no space is too small to be reimagined! Whether it’s a basement living room or any other room in your home, our goal is to bend luxury design with creativity. This basement transformation is a perfect example of how custom built-ins and a bold accent wall can turn a space that was otherwise forgotten about into an inviting area that is not only functional, but beautiful.
